The first documentation of the Johannisbrunnen (Johannis spring) was in 1678 and it was named "Brunn zu Stradn" (Spring of Stradn). Therefore it is the longest used acidulous mineral water spring in Styria.
In the 18th Century the personal physician of the empress Maria Theresia analyzed the water of the springs and attributed a healing effect to the water. In 1819 the Archduke Johann permitted the designation "Johannisbrunnen" (Johannis spring) for the healing water.
