The Past
The health and vacation region of Bad Gleichenberg with its communities Bad Gleichenberg, Bairisch Kölldorf, Merkendorf and Trautmannsdorf has been settled since prehistoric times, proven by numerous excavated finds. The oldest traces of human life go back to the early Stone Age. The first settlers established a village in 3000 B.C., probably the oldest in Styria.
Bad Gleichenberg as a Health Resort...
The Romans already knew about the healing effects of the Gleichenberger springs in the first century. In 1845 the Römerbrunnen was discovered to prove these allegations.
May 10, 1834 Mathias Constantin Capello Graf von Wickenburg, governor of Styria, laid the foundations for the medical use of the mineral springs after Dr. Werlé from Graz pointed out to him the thermal springs and their healing capacity.
Filled with enthusiasm over the idyllic landscape and the mild climate he decided to make this treasure accessible for everybody. This led to the founding of the Gleichenberger Johannisbrunnen Actien Vereines. The health resort rapidly gained international reputation and was often visited by the European Gentry. In 1837 a wonderful park with exotic trees and plants was built by Gräfin Emma von Wickenburg.
